    Half-Cooked Thoughts: Eggshell Hydroponics

Here is a demonstration of some basic hydroponics principles using eggshells.

    Version One
Here is my first attempt at eggshell hydroponics.

It is a simple passive system. The top egg has a couple of cotton balls, and drains into the lower egg.

Slits are cut into the top egg, so allow for both airflow and drainage.

It was working pretty well, until one of my lab assistants pointed out an intrinsic design flaw: it looks like a cat toy, as my assistant demonstrated by completely obliterating it in a catnip induced frenzy.

    Version Two
So back to the drawing board.

I needed a less tempting design.

For my new base, I picked an egg cup which, not surprisingly, fit the bottom egg rather well.

eggshell-hydroponics-2 The bottom egg is whole except for the top hole.
The second egg has slits cut into the shell, and a couple of cotton balls inside.

The third eggshell is similar to the second, but the holes are larger to hopefully accommodate roots. eggshell-hydroponics-5
eggshell-hydroponics-6 The top egg has a large hole in the bottom.

I thought that this might be a chance to take a closer look at a seedball, so I put one in the top, and watered.

Although I did have the foresight not to put tassles on this version, I thought it stacked a little precariously for feline curiosity, so Gentle Reader, I put it in an open glass jar.

    Peace, love and puka shells,

    Grubbycup

    1. This is what I needed first thing this morning~ Reading this article, and as I watched your egg “totem” grow and grow…and grow…. I got so tickled and by the time you added the outer protective glass casing over it? I had a full blown smile, even BEFORE my first cup of coffee this a.m., and thats just NOT an easy accomplishment~ ;)

Thanks for the smile, and the start to a great day!

    2. I’m sorry, I didnt see an edit button to add this to my previous thread and I wanted to include that while I was reading but in my previous post, I left out the part that as I was reading your article, I (who owns two cats that love to *assist* in the garden) had those “boy my cats would just…..! ” visions running through my mind! Both of them can be as comical as they are catastrophic….(no pun intended! ) :)
